Winner of '33 Elgin race to lead centennial parade
In the years just before the U.S. entered World War I, the annual Elgin National Road Races were the Indianapolis 500 of their era. Wearing leather helmets and goggles, and flanked by a ride-along mechanic, nationally famous drivers and car developers gripped the wheel and flew around curves on ordinary gravel country roads at 60 or 80 mph as thousands watched along the roadside.
